Cartimandua's Capital?: The late Iron Age Royal Site at Stanwick, North Yorkshire, Fieldwork and Analysis 1981â"2011: 175 (CBA Research Report)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 35.33 $Famous for the excavations carried out by Sir Mortimer Wheeler in 1951–52, the late Iron Age earthwork complex at Stanwick, North Yorks, is the largest prehistoric site in northern England. The site was probably the seat of the Brigantian queen Cartimandua, and both the structures and the finds from the site reflect this status. A recent reevaluation of the radiocarbon dates has led to a new chronology which has rewritten our understanding of late Iron Age Britain. This volume reports not only on the excavations of the 1980s, but also synthesizes other work in the environs of the site.

The Construction of the Roman Legionary Fortress at Inchtuthil 298 British Archaeological Reports British Series
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 91.84 $This volume presents a detailed examination of the resource implications of building a large fortress, focusing on evidence from the unique site of Inchtuthil, Scotland, which was constructed and demolished within a period of only three years (AD 83-86). Elizabeth Shirley creates a methodology for determining the quantities of material and labour input required and the factors which affected construction. She then assesses additional structural aspects: roof-framing, roof coverings, walkways, flooring, lighting and ventilation and internal finishes. The majority of the study calculates quantities of materials, working methods and rates and labour requirements for work on and off the construction site. This includes large amounts of detailed information about a wide variety of structures within a Roman fort. The results are contrasted with other sites, including Strageath and Fendoch. Shirley argues that a study of the practicalities of constructing such a large-scale military building provides valuable information about the military advance into Scotland, the everyday life of Roman legionaries and their organisational and practical skills.

Hot Spotter's Report: Military Fables of Toxic Waste
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 22.25 $Many nuclear and other U.S. military facilities from World War II and the Cold War are now being closed and remediated. Some of these sites have even been transformed into nature refuges and hailed as models of environmental stewardship. Yet, as Shiloh R. Krupar argues, these efforts are too often doing less to solve the environmental and health problems caused by military industrialism than they are acting to obscure the reality of ongoing contamination, occupational illnesses, and general conditions of exposure. Using an unusual combination of empirical research, creative nonfiction, and fictional satire, Hot Spotter’s Report examines how the biopolitics of war promotes the idea of a postmilitary and postnuclear world, naturalizing toxicity and limiting human relations with the past and the land. The book’s case studies include the conversion of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal into a wildlife refuge, a project that draws on a green “creation story” to sanitize other histories of the site; the cleanup and management of the former plutonium factory Rocky Flats, where the supposed transfiguration of waste into wilderness allows the government to reduce the area it must manage; and a federal law intended to compensate ill nuclear bomb workers that has sometimes done more to benefit former weapons complexes.Detecting and exposing such “hot spots” of contamination, in part by satirizing government reports, Hot Spotter’s Report seeks to cultivate irreverence, controversy, coalitional possibility, and ethical responses. The result is a darkly humorous but serious and powerful challenge to the biopolitics of war.

Quirigua Reports, Volume IV: Settlement Archaeology at Quirigua, Guatemala (University Museum Monograph)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 2.05 $This monograph reports the results of the Quiriguá Project Site Periphery Program, five seasons (1975-1979) of archaeological survey and excavation in the 96 km2 immediately adjoining the classic Maya site of Quiriguá. Ashmore identifies and helps us understand where and how the people of Quiriguá lived. She presents detailed material evidence in two data catalogues, for the floodplain settlement adjoining Quiriguá and for sites in the wider periphery. The work situates Quiriguá settlement firmly in a regional context, benefiting from the extraordinary abundance of information amassed in southeastern Mesoamerica since 1979. It sheds new light on the political, economic, and social dynamics of the region including the sometimes-fractious interactions between Quiriguá, its overlords at Copan, and people elsewhere in the Lower Motagua Valley and beyond.Content of this book's CD-ROM may be found online at this location: http://core.tdar.org/project/376582.University Museum Monograph, 126

UFO Contact from the Pleiades: A Preliminary Investigation Report
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 116.00 $By Wendelle Stevens (Author): There has been so much misinformation passed around by less than well informed self-styled UFO "experts" who have not been to the contact sites, have never talked to the witnesses, or the photographic laboratories who processed the original pictures, or the agencies who analyzed the recorded sounds of the spacecraft, or the laboratories who examined the physical specimens, or anything else in this case, that I have decided to release my notes in this preliminary report. The organization is roughly chronological covering the five years of my involvement in the order that I experienced it and showing the surprises as I encountered them. There were surprises all right, and there were other developments that one who has examined a number of UFO cases comes to expect but which are extremely bizarre to the witness when he experiences them for the first time. Like all UFO cases, without exception, there are very strange aspects to this long-term on-going series of contact events, evidence for which is highly elusive. We have tried to deal with the evidence that could be examined and tested in an objective manner, always keeping in mind a sincere conviction that a given item of evidence demonstrably valid does not make the rest valid any more than a false lead makes it all false. We have encountered spectacular truths as well as spectacular misperceptions and misunderstandings all in this one case. If anything in particular could be said about this case that sets it apart from all others, it would be the great amount of evidence available for testing and the unusually large number of participating witnesses to these events as they unfolded. I feel as qualified as any outsider to report this very extensive UFO contact case because I have maintained a very close contact with it and all the principals involved for five years, and have lived with them on their property for over 71 days in all.

Neanderthals in Context : A Report of the 1995-1998 Excavations at Gorham's and Vanguard Caves, Gibraltar
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 57.34 $Excavations at the adjacent sites of Gorham's Cave and Vanguard Cave have yielded a rich combination of archaeological and palaeoenvironmental finds covering a timespan of over 100,000 years. This volume deals with the primary results of the 1995-1998 excavations at both caves. The 24 chapters by leading specialists cover a range of topics from information concerning the nature and sequence of Middle Palaeolithic Neanderthal occupations to the reconstruction of the environmental context of these activities, based on proxy indicators such as sediments, charcoal, amphibians, reptiles, avifaunal remains, and small and large mammals. The Gibraltar evidence provides a rare insight into the lives of Neanderthals in a western Mediterranean coastal setting. It also presents site information on some of the last Neanderthal populations and the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition.
